By Savanna Eichinger

Our youth ministry team at YWAM Chico held a 2-week YWAM SST discipleship and missions camp this summer and it was phenomenal!

The Lord moved in powerful ways. Not only were the students’ lives touched by the presence of God in a new way, but Christoph and I were greatly impacted also. Several months back we asked God for a theme or key verse for the summer and he gave us the scripture in Matthew 22, where Jesus commands us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. It was clear to see that what the Lord was after were hearts that would be fully His! The phrase “All In” came to our minds with this verse and that is what we ran with.

The students truly lived this phrase. One night, during an application to a teaching on idols, many of them confessed and renounced the things in their lives that held them back from giving God their all. God did such a deep work in one student in particular who was really struggling with her identity. As the Holy Spirit ministered to her heart, she became completely convinced of God’s love for her. She had a revelation from God that she was His beloved and precious daughter, and the identity struggles were gone! The crazy thing about this is that no teachers or staff prompted that. It was all the Holy Spirit’s work. We worked hard to create an environment of safety where students could be honest about where they are at without condemnation, yet still creating space for God’s love and truth to impact their lives. It’s such a beautiful reminder that God is faithful to do what we can’t. Other students were able to forgive people who had hurt them and to declare their public trust in God. For many, this night was life changing!

At the same time, we saw that God was planting seeds in some students and softening their hearts. Sometimes from the outside it can seem discouraging when transformation doesn’t happen on our timetable, but God knows what He’s doing. In ministry we often look for quick results, and we tend to forget that Jesus is interested in a discipleship relationship for life. Two weeks is a short time, and His perusal of hearts far outlives any program. On the last day of our outreach, one student gave his life to the Lord. It was during a team time of worship, and a staff member felt impressed that some still were on the fence. God ended up giving me a prophetic song about not staying on the fence but jumping all in, and God just moved! Christoph also had similar words that tied together this theme. So we decided to do an altar call and the love of God began to overwhelm this student and others. He decided he wanted to be “all in”, and he publicly declared that! Many others also publicly confessed their need for Jesus and their answer to His call.

This all happened on the last day!

God can do anything. We don’t have to make things happen. Our job is to create a safe place, discerning what God is wanting to do and say, and then facilitating that. That’s it. God’s presence does the rest.

Christoph and I learned so much through this YWAM SST, and we will forever be changed as a married couple and as young leaders. And we’re excited for more! God is so very good and faithful.

1. Every culture and country reflect the character of God in such a unique & beautiful way.

The people who live in the Himalayan region are so hospitable, generous, and kind. Our outreach team would be walking down the street, and the people would invite us into their home for tea. They would offer us snacks and be fully present to hear what we wanted to share. They weren’t consumed by their busy schedules or their phones, but they were interruptible. They stopped their day for us. I think that’s how Jesus lived when He was on the earth. He was interrupted by people all the time and stopped to listen and give them His attention. Jesus was generous with His time, and God’s heart is hospitable. Even though maybe Jesus didn’t have a physical home to welcome people into, He welcomed people into His heart and His life.

2. God is bigger and more powerful than I thought, & prayer actually works!

Sometimes in America I put God in a box. I get comfortable going to church on Sundays, singing a few songs, and having Bible study once a week. I think about stories from the Bible of healings and miracles, and it seems like they were so long ago. On DTS outreach I saw the power of God up close! We walked up to one lady’s house, and she welcomed us in and served us tea. She was bent over and appeared to be in a lot of pain in her back and knee as she walked. We asked if we could pray for her, and she said yes, probably eager to see if anything would help the pain. After we prayed a simple prayer, she stood all the way up straight and said there was no pain in her back. She then started jumping up and down and said there was no pain in her knee either. This was a miracle! The same power of God that healed people in the Bible is able to heal people today too. Prayer really works, and this lady experienced God’s power. We all saw it in front of our eyes.

3. I can still show God’s love without speaking the same language.

If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to speak and understand every language. It is so frustrating to not be able to communicate with someone right in front of you. It can look comical as we both speak and try hand gestures and still have no idea what the other person is saying. I began learning small words or phrases in the local language, and some young people there knew English, but I learned that there are many ways to communicate, have fun, and show love without speaking the same language. Every time we were around children, we either played soccer, painted fingernails, danced together, played with puppies, shared snacks, threw a ball, played patty cake, took silly photos, or braided hair. These may seem like insignificant or silly moments, but I believe it really showed these children value by getting creative and spending time with them. It would have been easier to give up, so I really had to be intentional, but I believe Jesus would have done the same.

4. Material possessions don’t matter as much as I thought they did.

There are lots of things I have to be thankful for living here in America, and I don’t realize it until I travel to a developing nation that lives mostly below the poverty line. I often enjoy my comfortable bed in my own room or drive my car without even thinking twice about how many people in the world don’t own a bed or car at all. I mostly eat the foods that I want, when I want them, and get to shower in hot water every day. I own plenty of clothes and use a washer and dryer to clean them. When we were on DTS outreach we often slept on the floor, showered in cold water, washed our clothes by hand, and ate rice every day. At first these things seemed rough and made me realize how much I take for granted. But as our team began to make friends and live alongside the people, those material things didn’t seem to matter as much. I saw firsthand that the things of God and the kingdom are way more important than any earthly possessions or conveniences. After all, the things here on earth will pass away, but treasures stored up in heaven will last for eternity. We met and shared life with many people who don’t own a lot of material things, but they’re some of the happiest people I’ve ever seen. They have a passion for God and joy that comes only from Jesus. They have incredible faith and complete surrender to Him. They enjoy a simple life with God as their true Provider. I had to depend on God more than ever before because of the moments of being uncomfortable, and He was so kind to remind me of what really matters: people’s souls for eternity.

5. There are many people in the world who have NEVER heard of Jesus before, and they’re eager and ready to accept Him if someone will tell them.

Often on DTS outreach we would go out in groups of 3 or 4 with a translator to meet local people and share about Jesus. On one particular day we felt like we were supposed to take a left toward a specific house. As we walked up, there was an elderly man sitting on the front steps. We told him we had some good news for him and asked if he had ever heard of Jesus before. He said no. He had never heard of who that was. He asked us to tell him, who is Jesus? Why should he know about Jesus? We proceeded to share the story of the gospel and how Jesus loved him so personally. We asked if he understood and wanted to receive Jesus. He began to cry and shared how his family was in a really hard situation with one son in jail and another son that had passed away. He said, “You say this Jesus offers peace and security of eternal life?” His heart was ready to receive. We prayed together and gave him a Bible and rejoiced together. We shared some other stories of what Jesus did while He lived here on earth, and we invited him to join us for church on Sunday. There are many people on the earth who have never heard of Jesus before, but they are ready to receive if someone will tell them!

6. God doesn’t NEED me, but He will use me if I’m willing.

There’s a paradox here, and I often go back and forth between two thoughts. On one hand, in my pride, I began to think that God needed me to be a missionary in order for people around the world to be saved. It was so incredible to pray for people and see them get healed and saved right in front of me. Why aren’t more people being missionaries? God needs us to go tell people about Jesus! The other half of the time I think, “How could He possibly use me–nobody special–with moments full of insecurity, fear, and doubt?”

The reality is: God is capable of revealing Himself to everyone on the earth, and 2 Peter 3:9 says that He doesn’t want anyone to die without knowing Him, but instead wants everyone to come to repentance. But God loves to use us if we are willing. It really still blows my mind that God would use me. He loves it when we partner with what He’s already doing in the world and come alongside to join His work. He loves how it builds our faith and how it helps us grow to become more like Jesus. He loves to use our stories–full of brokenness, fear, and doubt–to impact others. Because all the glory goes to Him anyways. It’s not about me, or anything I do. It’s about Him. I was able to share my testimony on DTS outreach and see how God used my failures, shortcomings, and insecurities to bring breakthrough for others.

7. The things I’m passionate about aren’t an accident & God can use them in missions.

I’ve been an athlete since high school, so I’m very passionate about sports and fitness. I have also loved missions since high school and felt called to be a missionary. I used to think that those two things don’t go together at all, but now I know that God gave me those passions on purpose to use sports to connect with people and share the gospel. On DTS outreach we were able to host some soccer games, volleyball tournaments, and dance fitness classes to connect with people, share our testimonies, and preach the Good News about Jesus. I’ve seen this in my friends with other talents as well. In missions there is a place for people who love children, people who love photography, people who love acting, people who love painting, people who love numbers and math, people who love cleaning or being behind the scenes and everything in between. Whatever your skill, gift or passion, God gave it to you on purpose, and He can use it to impact people for the Kingdom of God.

“For the eyes of the LORD move to and from throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” 2 Chronicles 16:9a

In 2013 I came across an article about Jane Chen, a woman that was deeply moved by the high percentage of child mortality around the world, especially in under-developed nations. She stepped into an innovative journey of creating a tool that was much more cost effective and usable by the mothers of the premature children being born susceptible to child mortality. Normally an incubator would cost around $20k and could only be used by professionals. She focused first in India. Most of the children dying were in villages where mothers did not have health care or were too far from the cities to reach for help. The technology she developed cost around $300 per unit and could be easily learned by mothers in a village. This technology has saved thousands of lives daily that would have otherwise perished.

This is an incredible example of having the right motivation, “to love our neighbor as ourselves”, and passion to create with our God given resources and talents, in order to bring the highest good. I can’t help but imagine this young lady being a Christian that was desiring to help the brokenness of the planet. God stood behind her idea and “strongly supported” her into finding success.

What a powerful opportunity we have to co-create with God in bringing His beauty into ugliness, His order into places of chaos and His abundance into places of great scarcity. Rather than being afraid and hiding away, waiting for Jesus to return, I believe our stance as Christians should be that of this young lady that created this technology to save lives.

It’s a stance of being on the offensive, rather than on the defensive. God said that the gates of hell would not prevail against His bride. The enemy has clearly come to steal, kill and destroy that which matters most to God. “What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,” Psalms 8:4-6 NASB. We have a responsibility to take up…with God.

“Solitude gives birth to the original in us, to beauty unfamiliar and perilous— to poetry,” -Sherry Turkle. It has happened to me so often that from long hikes or just unplanned moments by myself for a longer period of time in the wilderness, things begin to flow like a spring of living water coming out from us. It’s a process and it must be tended to and protected. It is special to have these moments with God, where we allow the gift of imagination to rest and connect with the limitlessness of God’s heart.

For my 3–hour device free reflection time, I chose to go up to a mountain range about 20 minutes from where I live. (Cohasset) The temperature drops about 10 degrees and the terrain completely changes. Deep forest of pine trees and wilderness are all around me. It’s so peaceful, yet so loud. The wind going through the pine trees sounds like ocean waves coming and going. I ask myself, “Why don’t I come out here more often?”. It takes time for the silence to engulf me fully. At first my mind is thinking of many things, such as expectations, people to see, things to do that were left undone. Could I really get away this long? Shouldn’t I be with the boys or my wife? I should be doing this or that… etc, etc. The silence in the car almost felt like it prepared me for this special moment. It felt like I was walking into a ritual of sorts, to get away with no distractions. I felt God’s delight. My inner voice felt louder than normal. I whispered things to myself.

Turkle underscored that, “when we let our focus shift away from the people and things around us, we are better able to think critically about our own thoughts, a process psychologists call meta-cognition”. I heard her warning of the dangers of living a life of constant connection. This is my tension. I experience the reality of finding myself always connecting to my phone, checking my messages, often from our work groups, making sure that I’m answering any questions and commenting on things to make my contribution, or making sure people know where I stand on something said. I feel the tension in it. Do I really need to say something? Am I saying it for other’s sake or for my sake? For how I think others might see me?

In solitude I evaluate my intentions. I believe it is there where the Holy Spirit tugs our hearts.

Just outside of our front porch stands a majestic redwood tree. It rises into the sky like Jack’s beanstalk, above the oaks and pines that dot the landscape. It is weathered and a little scraggly but shoots straight up in the gorgeous July sky. Everything around it pales in comparison and the hummingbirds dance through the needles and branches of the tree with joy and gusto. There is a natural spring next to us that the big tree has tapped into and has dug it’s roots deep. Psalm 1:1,2 says ” His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on it he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of living water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does, prospers.”

God often uses examples in nature to give us a spiritual lesson. Every time I see that tree and the spring, I am reminded of His promise. We can be outwardly prosperous with material possessions, a good job, fancy vacations but to truly prosper on the inside where it matters the most, we must tap into the source of life. John Steinbeck wrote about the redwood, “The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It’s not only their unbelievable stature, nor their color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.”

Steinbeck is a great writer and these words are breathtaking and romantic but I would rather focus on the One who created the tree rather than the tree itself. The creator is often overshadowed by the creation. That which is beautiful, whether it be a radiant sunset, a multi colored tropical bird or a gigantic redwood tree inspire awe and wonder in us. We were made that way, eternity is in our hearts and we long for it. I completely enjoy those things but understand the magnificence of He who called it into being is much greater. When we behold Him in His creation then awe and wonder can live in our hearts peacefully, purely and with true pleasure. Let us tap into that well that never runs dry and we truly will prosper, in ways that we never imagined.

Relationship with God is no different to relationship with a friend – in order to develop and maintain that relationship it requires time and conversation which are two things I was not giving God. These first two weeks of DTS have revealed God’s longing for intimacy with me and as I begin to understand this desire, it is increasing my hunger for more of Him.

Jesus is worthy of our hearts.

In the beginning of time God created a paradise that He entrusted man with to be in communion with Him forever. We imperfect people were chosen to be loved by a perfect creator of life. We had one thing to steer clear from, sin. Sin is always a choice, it is never something that “just happens” to someone. In the middle of the paradise there was a jealous bitter being that wanted nothing but to kill, steal, and destroy. That bitter being lied to us, told us that our perfect God was hiding something from us. We believed the liar. Lies are always what separate us from God. In that moment we handed over the authority on Earth to the liar. God was so upset that His creation He loved so much had been tricked. God could have left us there in our mess but instead He wanted to get us back. God sent His one and only Son to redeem us. Jesus came down as a man, lived a perfect life, died the death we deserved, AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD WITH THE AUTHORITY OF GOD. Then Jesus didn’t stop there. Jesus offered us the keys AGAIN. The author of life gives us the choice to step into our inheritance or not. God’s love for us is ever flowing and never ceasing BUT not forced. There is no mistake that is big enough that our God will leave us. He will never stop loving us and that is just one of the reasons Jesus is worthy of our hearts.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

                       -Deuteronomy 31:6

Jesus is worthy of our yes.

When we become aware of the relentless pursuit of Christ it makes us WANT to love and serve God. When our soul is met by the creator of Love it drives us to want to share it with others. When Jesus walked this earth He did not ask people “what can you give me?” Jesus was always giving. Jesus was fully deserving of worship and praise yet He was out healing, delivering, and setting people free who were not deserving. If the King can give freely to an undeserving people then surely we can love and serve the most worthy in the universe. Also following Jesus gives us so much more than we leave behind. It may sound hard or intimidating to give your life to something, but the only thing that Jesus is interested in “taking” from us is the lies and bondage of the enemy.

Matthew 6:31-34

31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

It can be easy to just love God comfortably with our lives which generally means living your life and “adding” God to it. If you want to watch your life be dramatically changed for the better give your full “yes” to Jesus with your life. You will see God move in your family, your work, your health, your emotions, and so much more. God will start to use you to bring others to Him. There is nothing more fulfilling than letting your soul be led by the One who created it. If you find yourself waking up and saying “there has be something more than this” I can promise you that there is, and His name is King Jesus. Jesus desires a relationship with you and loves you more than you can even know.

Jeremiah 1:5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
